We’re a mother-daughter duo who also operate Paper Luxe Stationery & Gifts and The Curious Bear Toy & Book Shop (located on either side of The Nineteenth space). We have the honor of employing 10+ women from our community between our three ventures.
Manager, The Curious Bear
When looking for a larger location to move our gift shop, Paper Luxe, into in 2017, workshop space was an absolute must. We loved hosting creative workshops, but not rearranging the entire shop each time to accommodate. When we found this amazing natural light-filled breezeway of sorts next to the perfect retail space, with roll-up garage doors and polished concrete floors, we knew we’d found our forever-home for Paper Luxe and for future workshops.
We also discovered there were a lot of other people in our community that were searching for a similar creative space to hold their workshops, business meetings, baby showers, and birthday parties. Literally every day a customer would ask if the space was available to rent. So while we still hold our own workshops and birthday parties in the space, we’ve also now made it available to rent to our community!
Why “The Nineteenth”?
Our main cross-street is 19th Street that stretches from University Place, through Fircrest, and all the way across Tacoma to Commencement Bay. The Nineteenth is located on the block where all three cities meet. We also started the business in 2019. And most importantly, as a woman owned-and-operated small business, the 19th Amendment (Women’s Suffrage – passed by congress in 1919) is near and dear to our hearts.
